I need help. I am really, really thinking of getting rid of my Fiesta ST these days. I just commute, and commute and commute. Gas is $6.85CAD a gallon ($5.23USD) running 94 octane and I’m getting 21mpg in my ST right now. Also, it’s bumpy, loud, has 95,000kms and Myfordtouch.
I am thinking a CPO vehicle, probably a Mazda because they are nice, I get an owners incentive and a discount due to my SCCBC membership.
Which of the following would you go for:
A soul red fully loaded 2016 Mazda6 GT (Automatic) with 15000km for $25K or a black fully loaded 2016 Mazda3 Sport GT (Manual) with 14600 at $23K.
Say they are equal due to the better fuel economy of the Mazda6 (the Mazda3 has the 2.5L). Do you take the bigger sedan with the auto, but way nicer interior or the hatchback with more guts and a 6MT?

Gas is expensive and you need a cheap commuter? Two wheels good.
Or just go Prius if you really want to save gas.

Prius? aww man, that would make me sad, probably worth looking into though.
Two wheels=dead.

Instead of the Prius, I would look at a HS250h or CT200h. Those would be less slow, better looking, and 40 plus mpg.

the Mazda3 with the 2.5 is nice... (only getting 21mpg in that Fiesta?)

Do you have the Kia Niro up there? 50
mpg....
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:00 |

yeah.... I’ll look at it.

I had a Ford Fusion hybrid for a rental for 7 weeks and while it wasn’t very inspiring to drive, it was a great commuter and 600 miles out of a tank of gas was wonderful (I averaged 45mpg over the timeframe that I had it). BUT, if I were going that route, I’d probably go with a prius.

The Fiesta is tuned

And Ecoboost is more like powerboost.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I have driven the Civic Turbo and it’s an excellent car for its class and if you’re OK with an auto you should be OK with the Honda CVT if it’s used predominantly for commuting.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:09 |

it doesn’t matter if it’s “tuned,” it’ll only use as much fuel as you tell it to. if you’re only getting 21 mpg in a Fiesta then you’re driving the piss out of it
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:09 |
|
Or the Hyundai Ioniq.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:10 |

I like the 3, b ut I’d go 6 here.
Then again a CPO ND Miata would be high on fun and low on fuel...
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:10 |

The 3 because even if it’s not modded a stick means you can still have the feeling of having fun...sure my Accent isn’t a performance car, but at least the manual is entertaining when you want it to be in a slow car fast way. Mazda are known for building sportier-feeling cars than other companies, so I would say get the 3 with stick to accentuate that on your commute.
Then again, are you the type of person whose clutch foot is going to get tired in a commute?
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:13 |

....no comment.
OK, fine. I drive it like I stole it every day. But it makes me!!!
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:13 |

Some days, yeah I do get tired. Not sure if I want to give up my 6 shooter though
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:14 |

Yeah, the niro and Iconiq are on the list.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:14 |

yeah, but I’m 6'2
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:14 |

I’ve achieved 42 in mine before it was tuned... You just have to drive it gingerly. Full disclosure: http://www.fuelly.com/car/ford/fiesta/2016/bamahoon/824136

I’ve thought about a boring car, and then I got what is considered one of the more dynamic boring cars as a loaner. I no longer want a boring car.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:17 |

Forgive my understanding, but when you mean 6-shooter, do you mean your ST’s manual with 6 gears?
Because the 3 manual
also has 6 gears?
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:21 |

yeah, lol. Sorry.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:21 |

I’m 6'1 and am currently averaging 32mpg in my ND.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:22 |

honestly, I need a boring car. I just eat up the miles. A fun car does not deserve that. I could afford something fun, but I want to divert more of my disposable income to the truck and getting a better house
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:23 |

I’d be open to a miata, but I just couldn’t justify it.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:24 |

If you want to do the hybrid thing a first gen Insight is the way to go. 60+ mpg and a stick!
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:28 |

No worries man, figure that was what you meant! :)
Hopefully you can figure something out. I know personally, even in a commute, I would miss a manual because I would miss that connection with the car, but you go with whatever suits you best! :)
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:29 |

I’ve pointed this out on Fiesta pages more than once, it’s just a Fiesta.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:30 |

I really treat mine well. Like, baby it. I want someone else to enjoy it.
Also, it is a Fiesta, which makes it a brutal commuter car to spend long trips in
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:31 |
|
then I fail to see the economy in spending the money on a bigger, heavier vehicle.
if you just want a new car, say so. don’t come up with weak excuses.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:32 |

I want a new car. But also, the fact that my commute is quite urban and has a lot of stop/go AND the car takes 94 which does not help
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:34 |

Literally YOLO.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 22:37 |

I also only want to get married once!
![]() 07/09/2018 at 23:09 |

You want as far away from your “bumpy loud” as possible, and you commute. You want the 6.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 23:19 |
|
Yeah, I think so too. I had a 6 before the ST. Time to go home.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 23:25 |

But that’s a Honda battery and those are bad.
![]() 07/09/2018 at 23:39 |

Let’s just say that a vehicle with no roof has a lot of recreational room. Keep the magic alive, get a Miata.

Ct200h tho

Does your amount of commuting overwhelm the desire for a manual? If not I'm sure the Mazda 6 would be a good choice for a dd

I’ve found that I can only get so close to the mythical mpg claims of the manufacturer because sometimes I just want to drive. I couldn’t even get a Kei car to do (
approximately) 30mpg because I had to keep my foot on the floor just to make it up the hills/mountains here. That and actually beating the little gran

green required me to floor it.
By being a little conservative I average about the same in my underpowered Legacy 2.0i. I seem to have a limit placed on me by the universe which says I can achieve a max of 22mpg regardless of vehicle claims. Maybe you have the same limit, and shouldn’t fight it.

You left off an important part of the calculation. What is the payoff amount on your current car? I went through this dilemma when I was commuting 80 miles one-way. My mom reminded me that I could buy a LOT of fuel for the difference in the payoff of my truck and the cost of a new car.
By the way, if you do decide to buy new, take a look at the V-6 Mustang, Camaro, and Challenger. All three are fast and quiet. My rental Challenger is getting 24+mpg combined even with my heavy right foot.

It's paid for
![]() 07/10/2018 at 08:11 |

Well, then, that makes anything you buy a really expensive way to save money.

This is a case where which gen you choose should make a big difference in refinement, NVH, etc.
![]() 07/10/2018 at 12:23 |

If I were to buy a new car, it would be a 16/17 model.

I just like to point out the both these cars have the same 2.5L engine with the same power.

A certified pre-owned MK7 Golf? As someone who went from a Mazda to a VW, the interior will make you feel like luxury car. Also the warranty on newer VWs approaches 60k miles in the USA. I assume the 2017 cars are similar as well. I have no idea about price but it would still be fun and tossable and quiet and competent and you could justify the cost difference with the warranty difference.
